Goon (Michael Dowse)
This was an okay movie.
Like everyone else, I like Seann WIlliam Scott. He pulls off the simple minded, pure hearted guy easily for this movie, but wasn’t given very many lines for the movie. There are just way too many other characters with a story here. You have the aging, rival hockey player, Rhea. You have the once gold but now afraid LeFlemme. You have the girlfriend who is having conflicts, You have the never happy parents and the gay brother. You have the best friend that just really didn’t add anything to the movie but nastiness. Then you have Glatt, who wants desperately to be a part of something (and have approval from mom and dad) but doesn’t have the mental aptitude to accomplish it. The main turnoff to me was all the vulgar lines. If half of the vulgarities had been cut out, no one would have noticed and would have made it a better movie. I kept thinking, “use your big boy words”. I get that this movie is predominantly men and men are vulgar and gross, but jeez, this went above and beyond. Don’t go into this movie thinking it’s some heartfelt movie with lots of comedy. Think of it more of a slightly amusing movie about a guy who has a lot of toxic relationships and only one skill, fighting-and lots of vulgar lines and gestures as filler.
I give this movie 2.5 stars
Rated R for brutal violence, non-stop language, some strong sexual content and drug use
